Girls Against Boys (2013)

Girls Against Boys (2013)

(aka Destroy All Men!)
Release Date: On VOD and in Limited Theatrical release now, available on Blu-ray and DVD on 2/26.
Country: USA
Written & Directed by: Austin Chick.
Starring: Danielle Panabaker, Nicole LaLiberte, Liam Aiken, Michael Stahl-David and Andrew Howard.

We're all about good revenge flicks around these parts. If you're a fan of Horror movies, you pretty much have to be. So many great Horror, Thriller, Action flicks (et al.) have plots that revolve around someone getting revenge, avenging something, or evening up the score, that it's hard to find many that don't.

Just think about some of the great movies you've seen and loved that involve women getting revenge for whatever reason; Fatal Attraction, Kill Bill 1 & 2, I Spit on Your Grave, Carrie, The Dragon Tattoo series... In movies, women are often times wronged, and they just as often seek to right those wrongs through violent means.

Hell, even Friday the 13th (1980) was all about a woman seeking bloody retribution.

Is it odd that we always mistake these three for each other?

So when we first saw the trailer for Girls Against Boys, we were intrigued. We're definitely fans of the movie's star, Danielle Panabaker, so the idea of her getting some good old fashioned rape-revenge on a bunch of douchebag guys was all good with us.

Let us say right off the bat here, that we love to be snarky and lace the serious parts of our reviews with humor, oft times of the inappropriate kind. Horror is a heavy subject, so we aim to keep things as light as we can, even if only through ridiculous picture captions or the like. Plus, we fancy ourselves funny.

On that note, I'd like to say that rape isn't really a topic to be making jokes about. We do it anyway, because humor is always the best way to make a tough subject feel a bit less harsh, but we really don't think it's funny. *On a side note, rape is pretty funny if it involves a clown, and maybe some sort of zany horn or whistle. Or Benny Hill music.

Alright, fine, It's not funny. Relax.

The premise of this movie involves a sweet college student named Shae, who gets dumped by her married boyfriend when he decides he wants to focus more on his wife and young daughter, and not bang her on the side anymore. Like most women who sleep with married men and don't understand that they are just a piece of ass on the side, this sends her into a state of sadness and bewilderment.

"OMG why me!?!"

Lucky for her, she works with a sassy rocker chick named Lulu, whose actions and attitude are even more annoying than her retarded name. Lu tells Shae that they need to go out and dance and have some fun, and to forget the no good bastard of a married man who cast her to the side like some toy, even though that's exactly what she was. Sounds like a reasonable plan.

"Wait... I'm a toy?"

They meet some hipster d-bags at a club, and after getting completely wasted, decide to go back to their trendy SOHO (?!?) loft with them, because they have their own DJ waiting there! (They really need to make a revenge movie where people who don't suck just go around killing Hipsters. I'd watch that shit in a heartbeat.) Anywho, back at the douche loft, one thing leads to another and Shae finds herself at the business end of a raping. Naturally, she calls her married ex-boyfriend to comfort her in her time of need, and he thinks she wants some post break up sex... and there she is, abused again.

"Why do I keep meeting guys like this?"

At this point, alone and doubly abused, Shae turns to her riot grrl pal Lu, who decides that killing every man they come across will heal all rape-inflicted wounds, and would be a hoot to boot, because men have it coming anyhow, right? Overtly bloody revenge ensues.

The only constant in all of your failed relationships, is you.
For all of its issues, Girls Against Boys was a visual treat for us. We loved the way the Cinematographer chose to shoot her scenes, and the way that so many of them seemed to take their time and even linger in places. The film's atmosphere is on par with its visuals, as being strong and well executed. As violent and crazy as some parts of the movie were, its best moments were its more subtle and quiet ones.

Danielle Panabaker did a hell of a job here. Her use of  facial expressions and body language to convey her character's inner feelings and demons was great to watch. I don't know that she'll get the credit she deserves for her performance in this one or not, and that's a shame, because she really harnessed the movie's atmosphere and subtext and made it her bitch.

Stop staring like that, you're creeping us out.

I have a few big issues with this movie, which I will just go on a short tangent about, alright? Alright.

First, Shae is a totally non-sympathetic character. She's having an affair with a married man (which makes her pathetic), whom she stalks after he breaks it off with her (making her look even more pathetic.) Then, as a cure all for her heartbreak, she hits the club, gets wasted, and ends up going home with some complete strangers, which results in her being raped. Then... yes, there's another then... after enduring that horrific trauma, she revisits her dysfunctional relationship and calls her married ex which results in more abuse... I mean are we really supposed to feel for a girl who puts herself in these situations? Get some self esteem and get your shit together already.

Second on my ire-filled list, is her only friend in NYC, Lulu. Dumb ass name aside (Lulu? Come on), there's nothing whatsoever that's likable about the girl. She's portrayed as being a crazy bitch who thinks all men are horrible and useless pieces of trash, and yet she claims to have never suffered any childhood trauma that warped her into this mindset of wanting all men dead, which makes her character not only annoying, but troubling; she's not a pissed off, strong woman who is tired of being trampled on by self entitled men... she's just crazy.

Come on. Who does this? (Insane people. That's who.)

Third, and most important of all, is that these two nutty bitches are supposed to be the good guys. You know, two women who are out to teach the evil men of the world not to fuck with girls who have guns and katanas. Problem is, they aren't the good guys at all. Shae goes from sweet and innocent to menacingly silent death dealer in the space of days, which shows us that maybe she's not just traumatized, and that she's really just a bit wonky, and always has been. Lu is just plain wonky. All men are worthless to her, and so lets kill them. It all just felt disingenuous to us.

It felt like the point of the movie was that these girls are supposed to be strong female archetypes, but they end up being nothing of the sort. They're weak and off kilter, and to me, that doesn't spell feminist at all. *As a man, I'm obviously offering a man's viewpoint of what the word "Feminist" should mean here, but come on. If these girls are supposed to embody Feminist ideals, then Feminism is a bunch of sad B.S.

She really was great in this movie though.

Rape is bad, In fact, it's just downright horrific. It's jsut that I'm not sure that scantily clad girls running around with guns and killing those who have wronged them, is much better. I'm all for rapists being put down like dogs gone bad, because that's just a service to humanity. What I'm not all for is throwing a couple of hot chicks on screen in slutty clothes, placing them in situations that no strong woman would ever find herself in, and set them to killing a gaggle of men "because they're all worthless pigs anyway," and trying to paint it all as some sort of female empowerment.

Had it just been Shae exacting her revenge all alone, sans the help of her bitter Suicide Girl wanna be crimey, I may have bought her descent into madness and revenge more than I did. An isolated person, suffering a succession of major traumas in a short span of time and becoming unhinged because of them, sounds fairly possible to me. I can even buy into the whole "she snapped and did some crazy things" bit too. It would have definitely been less annoying without the antagonistic riot grrl pushing her towards it. It just didn't feel realistic at all.

She would have never done all of this on her own, which I know is the point, but still.

Let's not even get into how the one nice guy that Shae meets, and who treats her with nothing but respect and decency, sends the movie on a lame Single White Female sort of bent either. That whole thing just served to reveal Lulu for who she really was; a girl who wanted to get another girl in bed. It just cheapened things even further, in our eyes.

Aside from some great visuals and some really great Cinematography, and what we feel is a great, nuanced performance by Danielle Panabaker, this movie ultimately doesn't work for us. Its characters just could'nt generate enough sympathy from us to make us care about them in any sort of real way, and thus the story felt thinner and less substantial than it should have. It's not a bad movie, per se, it's just that the parts of the movie that we didn't like, kept us from liking the parts that we did.

For us, Girls Against Boys is a D+/C- affair, that really could have been way better than it was.

So here we are at the end of a review in which we ranted about what is or isn't Feminism, and we're posting sexy pictures of Danielle Panabaker. Pretty sexist of us, huh? Well, I would argue that the fact that Ms. Panabaker is confident enough in herself to pose for pictures like this is, in and of itself, the purest form of Feminism.

You go, girl!

The Theatrical Trauma of February 21st

The Theatrical Trauma of February 21st

The last Friday in February is here, and with it comes a few noteworthy releases that might satisfy our Theatrical needs this coming weekend.

Dark Skies is the big one for Horror fans this week. It's been a while since we've seen a good "Aliens are after our kids!" flick, so we're willing to give this one a go and hope for the best. The movie's trailers look decent enough, and we like Keri Russell, so how bad could it really be? *In all fairness, it could be really bad, but we're trying to stay positive here.

Snitch is a flick that we're all sorts of excited to see, even though it's most likely going to be a standard PG-13 level, brainless action flick. We here at THC love The Rock, and even when he's in a movie that sucks, he ends up making it at least somewhat enjoyable. For better or for worse, we will happily see this one this weekend.

Finally we have Inescapable, the Limited Release Mystery/Thriller flick that looks like a spin on Taken, only with the hero being from Damascus, Syria. We've long been fans of Alexander Siddig's work, and Marisa Tomei is always a plus, so we'll most likely check this one out on VOD when we have the time. *The fact that we really want to see this movie despite fu**ing Pacey from Dawson's Creek being in, says alot about it. It looks cool, even despite Pacey and his Pacey-like presence.

Three new movies, and three decent-looking choices. We really can't complain. *Except about Pacey. F**k him.

Awesome new Evil Dead poster released

Awesome new Evil Dead poster released

I'm starting to hate the idea of this remake less and less.

I feel like I'm losing my Horror street cred just by admitting that, but it can't be helped.

This poster is really bad ass. We'll find out if the movie is on April 5th.

Shadow of a Doubt (1943)

Shadow of a Doubt (1943)

Maybe I was having a bad day but I simply wasn't wowed by Shadow of a Doubt which has been hailed by every critic as a classic.  It was also Hitchcock's favorite film that he directed.  Therefore I know I'm standing on shaky ground by saying that while this film was well made, it was just O.K.

Here's why...most of the female leads employ an acting style that was prevalent in the 1940's but totally drives me nuts: rapid, over-annunciated speech with more emotion in it than is necessary.  This film would have been so much better if the ladies just spoke like normal human beings.  I couldn't get beyond this flaw to enjoy the film.  Thankfully, it toned down a bit toward the end of the film but it was too little, to late.  The little girl was particularly "precocious" and I don't mean that as a compliment.  I was hoping she would be dispatched early in the film so I didn't have to hear her obnoxious voice anymore.

Secondly, Shadow of a Doubt is always referred to as an intense and suspenseful thriller.  Did I miss something?  Give me The Wolf Man (1941) or Hitchcock's Suspicion (1941) over Shadow of a Doubt.  I found the first half of the film to be a bit of a yawner.  It was only when the killer began to show his true colors that things got interesting.

Speaking of killers, the bright spot of Shadow of a Doubt was definitely Joseph Cotton [Hush, Hush Sweet Charlotte, The Abominable Dr Phibes] whose films I admire.  I'm amazed he wasn't a huge star because he's such a great actor.  He imbues his character Uncle Charlie with charm and refinement and then subtly lets the character's dark side show.  This was a great role for Cotton and he totally hits it out of the ballpark.

So, I have to give this a Good and stand as the only person I've come across who was underwhelmed by this film.  Give me Psycho or The Birds over Shadow of a Doubt any day!

RATING: Good.

For more info check out the film's entry in IMDB.

The Haunting in Connecticut 2: Ghosts of Georgia (2013)

The Haunting in Connecticut 2: Ghosts of Georgia (2013)

(aka What Moron Named this Movie?)
Release Date: On VOD now, and in Limited Theatrical release on March 14th.
Country: USA.
Written by: David Coggeshall.

Directed by: Tom Elkins.

Starring: Abigail Spencer, Katee Sackhoff, Chad Michael Murray and Emily Alyn Lind.

I sit here tonight, stunned at my reaction to this movie.

2009's The Haunting in Connecticut was a really well made film, but it just fell flat as a scary ghost story. It was really just a standard, bland, PG-13 effort that was barely memorable.

And so when it was announced that HIC would be getting a sequel, we had two initial reactions: The first was "Oh God, why?" The second and even stronger reaction, was "Who came up with this moronic title?" *more on that below.

There was just no way that this ill-advised sequel to a lackluster snooze fest like HIC could be good. I wasn't trying to be willfully negative about it, but it was just destined to suck, right?

Well, I'm hardly ever wrong (maybe once a year at most), but in this case I am man enough to admit that I was totally in the wrong. Don't get used to it. Doesn't happen often.

HIC: Ghosts of Georgia is the story of a family who moves into an historic old house in Georgia, only to find that its dark history is still alive and well in the present day, in the form of some pissed off slave ghosts. And some white ghosts too. There's just a lot of pissed off ghosts running around Georgia, apparently.

This ghost is particularly pissed.

Lisa Wyrick has been able to see ghosts and touch the spirit world since she was a child, but she sees this ability as a curse, and does her best to stay drugged up so as not to be pestered by unwanted visitors from the netherworld. Unfortunately for her, her "curse" is hereditary, and her sweet little daughter Heidi sees dead people too. Unfortunately for Heidi, she thinks the dead people are her friends, and so she runs off at all hours of the day and night to play with them... especially the creepy, old ghost of "Mr. Gordy."

Your "friends" are creepy, kid.

As more and more creepy shit happens to the family, they discover that their new home was once a way station for the underground railroad, and its owner, cleverly nicknamed "The Station Master", was a kindly white man who gave runaway slaves a safe haven as they tried to escape to the North. Heidi's new friend, Mr. Gordy, is a descendant of The Station Master, and was ashamed of his Grandfather's well-doing, probably because he's a racist ghost.

Nothin' spells fun better than a good old fashioned Southern Hootenanny!

Long story short, things get more and more creepy for the Wyrick girls, and it's not long before the whole family is in danger. Even the slut sister who lives out back in her very own trailer (its Georgia, that's how they roll down there) is drawn into the supernatural melee that goes down. Will little Heidi fall victim to Mr. Gordy and his slave hatin' ways? Will Lisa ever kick her drug habit so that she can actually be of some use to her kid? Is there an even deeper and darker secret beneath it all that will change things for the worse in the end? Far be it from us to spoil things, but we will say that no one is ever safe from the ghosts of angry slaves... or of evil white guys. No one.

That's the scary white guy.
This movie absolutely surprised me. For being one that I thought would make me cringe and sigh for 90+ minutes, Ghosts of Georgia instead managed to do a pretty good job of entertaining me. Big deal, you say? It's is a big deal alright, because as an elitist prick of a film snob, that's no mean feat fo a "generic and safe" horror flick pull off these days.

Yeah, like that flashlight's gonna help.

The story was clever and well structured, and the tension was enjoyably creepy. There were a few moments where I actually felt creeped out, and that too is saying a lot. I don't want to give the impression that this movie was amazing and made me crap myself with fear, but it was solid and fun, none the less. Since this movie is based on a true story, the slavery aspect of things was pretty interesting in its own right.

We have to give some credit here to little Emily Alyn Lind, who played one hell of a role. She's a great little actress who I'm sure we'll be seeing more of soon enough. We also have to give some love to both Abigail Spencer and Katee Sackhoff (for obviously different reasons), who were equal parts hot and talented here. Especially Katee; she's kind of like the Queen of Geek Fanboys everywhere, and we love her. Even Chad Michael Murray was good here, and we always just thought of him as one of the guys from One Tree Hill. Turns out he's pretty likable and talented. Who knew?

Run, kid, it's a zombie! (Nope. Cicely Tyson.)
As much as we enjoyed this movie, we have to recognize that there are some less than desirable elements at play here. The movie starts off a bit slow, and most of the scares in the movie don't happen until the third reel, which may be off putting to some less than patient viewers. The plot mechanics also feel a bit too familiar and safe at times, mainly because the plot is a genuine mix of both elements. These are relatively minor gripes, but for the more demanding horror fans out there, they will feel just as genuinely valid.

Creepy kid is creepy.
Why in the hell is the word "Connecticut" even in the title of this movie? The movie doesn't take place in Connecticut, nor does it continue a story that began in Connecticut. Georgian ghosts have nothing to do with Connecticut, especially within the scope of this movie. This movie has nothing to do whatsoever with the state of Connecticut, or any hauntings that have happened therein, and so its title makes ZERO SENSE. None at all.

This isn't part 2 of The Haunting in Connecticut, because this movie has absolutely nothing to do with the first film, save for the fact Lionsgate wanted it to be related in name so as to be able to start a new series of haunting films.

I think it's pretty pathetic that Lionsgate thinks its audience so fucking stupid, that they couldn't make the connect to the first film in this series without using such a misplaced and inappropriately misleading title.

The/A Haunting in Georgia would have been fine, Lionsgate. Or even The/A Haunting: Ghosts of Georgia would have worked well. Those titles took me all of 12 seconds to come up with, and I'm not even a movie producer. I'm so proud of myself right now for having the tiniest shred of common sense. Go me!

You've been put on notice, Lionsgate... special scary notice!
There are actually some pretty good gore gags in this one, though they are few and far between. For the record, we consider anything that involves people vomiting bugs to be gory, because, eeew.

That scene was pretty awesome and inspired.
Nada.

Katee wears a tank top damn well, if I do say so myself.
Despite it having one of the dumbest and misleading titles of all time, Ghost of Georgia is a pretty decent ghost flick. You can't go into this one expecting much originality, or to be terrified beyond belief, because if you do you'll come away disappointed. If you are the type of Horror Fan that can enjoy the simpler movies of the genre though, then you may just end up having a pretty good time with this one. Give her a go on VOD if you're sitting around one night and are craving a decent spooker; it's definitely worth the $ 5.99 rental, and we think you'll like it. *Don't blame us if you don't though. B

Abigail Spencer + Katee Sackhoff = Double Yummy. It's fun to note that both of these tempting little POA's are on two of our favorite TV shows right now; Suits and Longmire, respectively. Not only do both shows rock, but who doesn't want to see these Hotties in action on a weekly basis? Check 'em.
